As a Black woman maternity photographer from Houston, Texas, I know that representation is important. It was with my own pregnancy that the desire to document every moment shifted to being a necessity to a complete understanding that moments are fleeting.
I was uncomfortable and displeased with the way I thought my body should be. Driven to find the beauty in my own insecurities, I pushed past being uncomfortable embraced my body as the changes that happen naturally in pregnancy, and took my own maternity photos! I wanted my unborn daughter to see the beginning stages of her precious life. I wanted her to know that the importance of being able to look back on these moments.
When I shared and displayed my maternity portraits, I felt an immense amount humility and satisfaction for the beauty they possessed. I saw no flaws, only the hope and guarantee of a beautiful future, and a new beginning. It was then that I realized that I could instill that same level of confidence to other expecting moms and parents.
